2015 Thrills: Twisted Colossus coming to Six Flags Magic Mountain

Twisted Colossus

Of all of the new attractions coming to theme parks in 2015, this project could be the most interesting.

Colossus, the classic wooden racing coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain, is undergoing a major renovation. More like a major upgrade – depending on how you see it, I guess. The Rocky Mountain Construction team will be transforming the two-tracked racing coaster into a one-track steel-wood hybrid coaster that will take riders up the same lift hill twice and have two trains dueling around each other.

Make sense?

Here are some of the elements the ride will feature, according to the SFMM website…

  • “Top Gun Stall” – an inversion where the train slows down upside down

  • Western Hemisphere’s first “High Five” – where two trains pass through an overbanked turn facing each other with the illusion that you can reach out and “high five” other riders

  • Zero G Roll where track twists 360 degrees

  • A staggering 128-foot drop at an amazing 80-degrees

  • 18 airtime hills

  • Two lift hills

  • Four minutes of thrills on nearly 5,000 feet of track – longest hybrid coaster in the world

18 AIRTIME HILLS. Sorry, just wanted to point that out.

It took me the better part of the day to wrap my head around how this thing will work. Basically, they are taking the two tracks from the old coaster and combining them into one, with a bunch of insane maneuvers throughout. If the operations team gets it right, it could be an absolute blast to ride. Here’s how the LA Times describes what it will take

The track will be two colors — blue and green — to indicate the two legs of the trip. In all, riders will experience 18 airtime hills, two lift hills, two 80-degree drops, two zero-G roll inversions and two passes through the high-five element. It’s enough to take your breath away just thinking about it. The new Twisted Colossus dual-lift coaster will require precise timing to dispatch one train every 110 seconds so that riders on both tracks will simultaneously climb the parallel lift hills and navigate the high-five element together.

It’s amazing to see the kinds of things a company like Rocky Mountain Construction is able to do with existing rides. Who knows….could an American Eagle upgrade be in the works someday? Probably shouldn’t have brought that up. We’ll keep you updating on opening dates for this thing – it’s high atop my list of must-rides. Here’s the Colossus promo video…

2015 Thrills: Six Flags Great America to celebrate 40 seasons

40SeasonsColorIt’s going to be Throwback Thursday all year at Six Flags Great America.

Today, SFGA announced their plans for 2015 – a yearly celebration that will look back on their four decades in business. The park opened in 1976 as Marriott’s Great America in Gurnee, Illinois. Next summer will be their 40th season, and they’ll be celebrating by brining back some of the classic kids rides. They include the Tots Livery Surrey Carriages, the Red Baron airplanes and the Lady Bugs.I remember the airplanes but I’m blanking on the others.

They also told me there would be improvements throughout the park, including a restoration of Hometown Square. Look for the gazebo to return and things to get back to their pre-Ignite look. There will also be weekly celebrations of various attractions throughout the park. For example, if it’s “Raging Bull Week,” the park will have a 1999 feel to it – the year the coaster opened. You can expect to hear music from that year and other touches throughout the park, and possibly even double rides on that particular coaster. Could be a lot of fun.

Here’s the promo video for the 40 seasons celebration….

We were with the families of the Jackie Robinson West Little League team after their big win against Rhode Island in the Little League World Series. Check out their reaction below…

LLWS: Jackie Robinson West focused heading into matchup with Rhode Island

Despite a big loss the day before, the Jackie Robinson West squad was focused heading into their big matchup against Rhode Island.

I took this shot about an hour before game time.

LLWS: On the road back to Williamsport, PA

We are heading back to Williamsport, PA for the rest of Jackie Robinson West’s run in the Little League World Series.

We decided to drive out this time, which means about 4-5 hours throught he beautiful terrain of northern Ohio (above). It’s been an amazing experience to cover this team and their families. We’ll have much more from the LLWS throughout the week!

LLWS: Cardboard box sledding in slow motion

It’s one of the traditions at Lamade Stadium here at the Little League World Series. Kids slide down this giant hill on broken down cardboard boxes. Adults, like me, try their best to get to the top to their live trucks without falling down and breaking everything in their body. Good times!

It was an emotional moment for these kids. Chicago’s Jackie Robinson West All-Stars would live out a dream – walking onto the field for the Little League World Series. They were the first team to come out of the tunnel during the Opening Ceremony.

Minnesota Timberwolves fans just can’t burn Kevin Love jerseys

KEVIN LOVE JERSEYS

It just wouldn’t be right to see a superstar leave a city without some good ol’ fashion jersey burnin’, right?

But that wouldn’t be “Minnesota Nice,” I guess. The below video shows how most Minnesotans have reacted to the Kevin Love to the Cavs news, according to comedian Mike Brody.

Hey – if I was a Timberwolves fan hearing that Andrew Wiggins is coming to town, I wouldn’t be too upset, either.
