Watch a BAT dive-bomb news anchors live on air

0

It’s a good morning, Tennessee! Unless you’re one of the news anchors at WATE, because there’s a good chance you will have a flying rat in your studio.

The “Good Morning Tennessee” team was interrupted by a bat flying around the studio right in the middle of their newscast. As you can imagine, it led to some hilarity. Turns out the studio is actually in an old mansion, more from WATE.com

The home of WATE has long been the subject of local lore. Ghosts have been rumored to walk the halls of the Greystone mansion, but a new inhabitant took up residence in the rafters of our studio – a bat.

The bat caused chaos as we kicked off the 6:00 hour of Good Morning Tennessee.

“Out of nowhere the bat comes about this far from my face,” said GMT Anchor Tearsa Smith. “It dive bombed us and you could literally hear me screaming because we’re on TV and I get that and it’s a newscast, but I was gone!”

Fortunately for WATE, a company called Varmint Busters was able to capture the bat and release it into a “wooded area.”

On Wednesday’s WGN Morning News, I put together a quick wrap of everything that was unveiled at the Apple event, along with some of the oddities people were talking about online.

Just as a refresher, here’s what we learned…

HANDS ON: Motorola’s Moto 360 smartwatch

“OK Google, TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER.”

Motorola has created the Soldier Field of smartwatches. It’s like a giant spaceship came out of nowhere and landed on your wrist. To the casual passerby it might look out of place, but get inside, and you start to fall in love with the thing.

THE SPECS

The Moto 360 is the first smartwatch to sport a round face – and it’s a BOLD round face. It features a 1.56″ 320×290 display with a backlit LCD screen. The body itself is 46mm in diameter with an 11.5mm height. The leather band model weighs 49g – basically, it doesn’t feel that much heavier than your standard large watch. It also comes with Corning Gorilla Glass because you’ll probably be banging this thing on plenty of stuff over its lifetime. IT’S BIG.

On the bottom of the watch you’ll find a health sensor that can track your heart rate. It also has a pedometer that keeps track of how many steps you’ve taken throughout the day. Start walking, son.

THE SOFTWARE

The Moto 360 runs on Android Wear through your smartphone. The watch shows you notifications when you get a text message, a tweet, or a message on Facebook. It will also vibrate when somebody is calling and give you the option to answer your phone, or you can decline the call and send the person a message instead. The watch has dual microphones that let you use your voice to accomplish all kinds of things – sending texts, asking for sports scores, telling your phone to navigate places and most important….to remind yourself to drink more water!

SO….HOW IS IT?

First, a little about me. I haven’t worn a watch in years. I’m talking since Pager Days, as in, “Hey man, can I see your phone I just got a page!”

That said, the size of the Moto 360 felt a little awkward at first. Yet after a full day of wear, I began to appreciate it. The Moto 360 feels like it’s made of something. It has some real weight to it, but it’s not TOO heavy. To put it simply, it doesn’t feel cheap.

My review model came with a black leather band. Motorola partnered with Chicago-based Horween Leather to make the bands for the Moto 360 – and the quality really shows. It feels like a band you would find on a nicer watch. It’s very comfortable and durable.

The display comes with some really nice features. For one, the watch stays in sleep mode until you raise your arm to look at it, then it pops to life with the face you choose. There are a good variety of options when it comes to your watch face, from ultra-modern digital numbers to classic hour and minute hands.

I used the Moto 360 with a few different phones – the LG G3 and Motorola’s new Moto X model. Not surprisingly, it seems to play better with the Moto X, but I had no problems syncing the phone with the G3. However, with both phones, the watch became disconnected a few times. A simple restart solved the problem in each of those cases. If you DON’T have a smartphone around to pair with the watch, or say you have an IPHONE (egads!), the Moto 360 becomes a fancy digital watch. It will still check your heart rate, count your steps and tell the time, but that’s about it.

This brings me to my biggest issue with the current version of the Moto 360 – it’s just too tied to your phone. When I get a notification about a new Facebook message, I want to read the entire message on my watch. I want to read all of my emails right there. I want driving directions to be coming to me right on the giant face. I’d love to see apps designed specifically for the product, a way to view my Twitter timeline and even retweet tweets using my voice right there on the watch.

As far as the fitness side, the heart rate feature was hit or miss. I really had to hold my arm still for it to work properly – that wasn’t easy when I was on a treadmill at the gym. Speaking of that, I hope more features are added to their health section – including the ability to track distances of runs and calories burned during workouts. And while we’re at it, why can’t the Moto 360 have a golf option to become a GPS yardage tracker when you’re on the course? I’m full of these ideas, by the way!

FINAL (INITIAL) THOUGHTS

The Moto 360 is a great start. I think it’s the best looking smartwatch on the market so far (Apple, you’re on the clock). It has the hardware to do more, now it’s time to take Android Wear to the next level and get some third-party apps designed specifically for this interface. I’m not sure that the current version is worth the $250 investment, but the more I wear it, the more I appreciate the potential of what a smartwatch like this can do.

We’ll be posting our WGN Morning News feature on all of Motorola’s new products after the story airs on Tuesday morning. You can check out the Moto 360 in further detail on the website, moto360.motorola.com.

Did you buy one of Motorola’s new Moto 360 smartwatches today? They’re already sold out online. I was at the launch event yesterday and will have a full report next week on WGN Morning News. If the rumors are true, Apple will be unveiling their wearable device on Tuesday – so this week we should be able to compare/contrast all of the new smartwatches hitting the market. Going to be a big week in tech news. We’ll try to make sense of it all on WGN!

Adam Levine’s Michael Jackson, Eddie Vedder impressions are pretty great

adam levine impressions

“The Voice” star, Maroon 5 frontman, the guy who played Is That Adam Levine? on “American Horror Story,” and now – Master Impressionist.

Adam Levine was a guest on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” and played a game of musical impressions. Digital wheel lands on an artist and a song, you sing the song like that artist. The affair led to some pretty interesting combinations – Michael Jackson singing the “Sesame Street” theme, Frank Sinatra taking on “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes,” and Eddie Vedder lamenting about “The Muffin Man.”

And guess what? Adam Levine does some pretty darn good impressions. Take a listen…

Harrison Ford, “Star Wars: Episode VII” back in production

han-solo-with-blaster

If carbonite couldn’t stop him….

Harrison Ford has recovered from the broken leg he suffered on the set of “Star Wars: Episode VII.” Reports say the anticipated sequel is back in production. Things had to be shut down when Ford went down because Han Solo has a major role in the new movie. More from EW

Since his character is a major part of the Episode VII story, this caused massive upheaval for the film schedule, which had to be reshuffled in the midst of production while the 72-year-old star recuperated.

As part of that reorganization, photography was placed on hold for two weeks this month, but the entire cast and crew returned to the U.K. this week and the film is officially going, well … full Force, according to sources close to the project.

I’m trying to avoid as many spoilers about the movie as possible, but it’s good to see that Mr. Ford is OK and things are back on track.

TRAILER: Jon Stewart’s “Rosewater” starring Gael Garcia Bernal

Rosewater Movie Stills Wallpaper

The first trailer for the Jon Stewart directed “Rosewater” is out. The movie stars Gael Garcia Bernal as journalist Maziar Bahari, who was detained by the Iranian government for over 100 days while covering the 2009 elections for Newsweek.

Early reviews aren’t so positive. The Hollywood Reporter seems to have an issue with the timing of the release

…while the issues of political oppression Rosewater deals with remain relevant in places all over the world, the jailing, rough interrogation and release after four months of a young journalist at the time of the 2009 Iranian presidential elections just doesn’t seem that timely or urgent given the hailstorm of insidious outrages that have taken place in the Middle East since then.

IndieWire gives “Rosewater” a C+….

As a movie, “Rosewater” — based on real life incident in which Stewart’s own “The Daily Show” inadvertently played a part — suffers from the director’s underwritten screenplay and several misconceived narrative devices. The portrait of Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari (Gael Garcia Bernal), who covered the divisive 2009 Iranian elections for Newsweek before getting detained by the country’s government for over 100 days following an appearance on Stewart’s show, never manages to transform the material into a satisfactory drama.

“Rosewater” opens in select theaters on November 7th, not sure about a Chicago release yet. I’ll have my review when the movie is screened for critics here. For now, check out the trailer below….

‘The Blacklist’ coming to Netflix, nets $2 million per episode

There is some good money in streaming.

Deadline, The Wrap and others are reporting NBC’s “The Blacklist” is coming to Netflix – for the low, low price of $2 million per episode.

The series, which premiered last September, was a breakout hit for NBC. Benefiting from a strong lead-in in the form of “The Voice,” the series scored a solid 3.8 rating/10 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic with its premiere episode. The debut also pulled in an impressive 12.6 million total viewers.

“The Blacklist” will hit Netflix on September 7th.

2015 Thrills: Tallest, fastest giga coaster coming to Carowinds

fury 325 drop

They’re calling it Fury 325 – it will be the tallest and fastest giga coaster in the world.

Carowinds made the announcement about a week ago, so I’m a little behind. The ride is designed by B&M and it features a 325-foot lift hill with an 81 degree first drop. That will send riders racing through more than 6,000 feet of track and speeds up to 95 miles per hour.

That’s pretty fast.

It’s all part of a $50 million investment Cedar Fair is putting into the Charlotte, North Carolina park. It’s hard to complain about a ride with an incredible looking first drop – but I just wish there were more airtime hills. Of course, all we have is this animation to go on. It could be a completely different story once you hop on board the car.

I can’t wait to find out for myself! Watch the videos…
