Squid Game Season 2 feels incomplete and ultimately disappointing – REVIEW

Watch my full video review of “Squid Game Season 2” here. Written review continues below!
I’m probably on an island with this – but I don’t think the Netflix series “Squid Game” needed a sequel. Every big question I had during the first season was pretty much answered. Why were all of these random people chosen to play these games? Where was all of the money coming from? Who would make it through to the end? Who was the person behind all of this? And would our main character go along with it all in the end, or would he walk away? All were answered. Yes, there was certainly a slight cliffhanger. What was Seong Gi-hun planning to do when he walked away at the end? But leaving that bit of intrigue was the perfect ending to me. Sure, we didn’t know exactly what would happen to him, but it solidified his character as somebody who was going to try and do the moral thing. It was a solid resolution. The show’s entire arc, pacing and payoffs made it one of the biggest shows in history. Dare I say it was pretty much perfect? If you’re going to return to this world with another season, or as we found out at the end of this one, multiple seasons, you’re going to have to create a brand new set of intriguing questions that need to be answered. The main premise of the Squid Game Season 2 storyline seems to be if Seong Gi-hun can orchestrate an uprising to shut these games down. That’s not nearly as interesting to me. We’re also asked to get invested with new side characters when we pretty much know what their fates will be. Again, I didn’t find a lot of it that interesting this time. There are some really great sequences. They know how to pace action during the actual game play. The Six-Legged Pentathlon has a great mix of humor and dread as the players encourage each other, and many come to the conclusion that they aren’t going to make it. This is where this show really works. I also enjoyed the twist of having the front man join the game. But I have a hard time believing that Seong Gi-hun really didn’t see that something was off with this guy. It seems pretty obvious for such a smart and observant character. Maybe we’ll learn more about this dynamic next season. It’s fitting that one of the characters brings up “The Matrix” this time around, because that’s the perfect comp for this series. The original “Matrix” film is an all-time classic. It’s got a thought-provoking premise that leads us down a winding road, with plenty of action, while asking big questions about who is really controlling the world around us. “The Matrix” also ends with a satisfying conclusion for our hero with a little bit of intrigue about where he goes from there. Dare I say the original movie is perfect? Then we had the sequels. I know many fans of “The Matrix” series will say the sequels are great, misunderstood and/or underappreciated. To me they were completely unnecessary. I know “Squid Game” has another season to go, so I’ll keep an open mind, but it feels like they are making the same mistake here. So in the end, this season feels incomplete to me. It would have been better if this was billed as the first part of the “Squid Game”‘ conclusion, because I don’t think this season stands well on its own. I’m invested enough to see it through when the next season drops in 2025. Hopefully it comes through with some kind of arc I don’t see coming. How about you? How are you feeling about Squid Game Season 2? I’d love to hear your thoughts and discuss some of your theories if you have any. You can find me on Facebook, X, and Instagram. Turkey Chili recipe: An easy favorite when the weather starts getting cold!

It’s the middle of October, perfect time to bust out one of our favorite recipes – Turkey Chili! This is one of our easy go-to’s and we’ve been making it for years. I like it because it’s simple. You can throw it together very quickly and it gets better each time you reheat it. You can also add your own veggies or hot sauce or whatever to this … but this is how we usually make it and we love it! Here’s our turkey chili recipe!

Turkey Chili – makes four servings

Ingredients:

30 oz. lean ground turkey 14.5 oz. can of diced tomatoes 30 oz. tomato sauce 4 1/2 tsp. chili powder 1/8 tsp. allspice 1/8 tsp. cumin 1/8 tsp. onion powder 1/8 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. Mrs. Dash Southwest Chipotle (If you’d like a spicier version, you can replace the diced tomatoes with Rotel!)

Directions:

  1. Brown the ground turkey and drain.
  2. Add all of the ingredients to a crock pot
  3. Cook for 8 hours on slow, or 4 hours on high. You can also cook it in a large pot on the stove in about an hour if you are in a pinch.

SNL parodies ‘Maury’ in hilarious ‘Home Videos’ sketch

What happens to guests on the “who is the father?” episodes of Maury Povich later on in life? Do they live happily ever after? That’s the concept behind a new Saturday Night Live sketch that aired this weekend. In “Home Videos,” a son is going through home video tapes with his parents, when he pulls out a tape that says “Big Announcement.” His dad tells him “that is the day I found out I was going to be a daddy.” And that’s when the “Corey” show starts and the son learns there is another side to his parents’ story, complete with a dramatic twist at the end. Watch the SNL sketch below…
SNL is on a pretty good run with their taped bits. Last week they created a commercial for Alaska Airlines after a door plug blew off one of their flights thousands of feet in the air. You can watch that here.

SNL rips Alaska Airlines in new commercial parody

It’s been a rough stretch for Alaska Airlines. Last year, an ex-Alaska pilot was accused of trying to cut the engines of a flight while riding in an extra seat in the cockpit. Then, earlier this month, a door plug blew off a flight after takeoff. That obviously caught the attention of Saturday Night Live. The show was back this weekend and put together one of their commercial parodies, this time for Alaska Airlines. SNL took on both incidents and even incorporated a throwback to hero pilot “Sully” Sullenberger. Let’s just say they didn’t hold back on this one. Watch the full ad here:

Saying goodbye to our dog Charlie

I’ve been dreading writing this post. I must have started, stopped, deleted and re-written it a hundred times. I think it feels like everything is final by writing and posting it. Two weeks ago we had to say goodbye to our dog, Charlie. He was just three and a half years old and was diagnosed with an aggressive type of cancer. There was nothing we could do but make him comfortable until it was time. We got Charlie during the pandemic. We have a lifestyle where we are gone a lot. We love to travel and are always out and about. In other words, we weren’t made to be a dog family. That’s what I always told myself, or told my kids when they asked to get a dog. A dog meant “more work” to me, work we couldn’t take on when we are constantly driving places or flying places – doing all of those things we love to do. Then the world shut down and we were home. We thought about it long and hard and took the plunge. A Sheepadoodle puppy became the newest member of our family.
The day Charlie came home. Summer 2020.
When we first got Charlie, both my wife and children had some things that took them away from home for about a week. That left me and this roughly 8-week old dog, together for about 10 days. That was when Charlie really became my dog. I was working from home with nowhere to go. That meant 10 days of being together all day. We connected.
Charlie was always there.
The family always joked that Charlie was my dog. If I went somewhere in the house, he followed behind. When I took a nap, he usually took a nap. If I was doing a workout, he was either laying there on the floor next to me or barking at me to work harder.

If I sat down to relax, he often ran up with a toy as if to say “oh no, it’s time to do something with me now.” When I got home from work every morning and opened the front door, the dog was usually laying right there waiting for a belly rub … or he was waiting in the bed anticipating the nap that was coming soon.
He always managed to find the squeakiest toy in the house.
The truth was that he loved all of us unconditionally. Whether you were having a bad day or a great day, if you were in a good mood or a crabby mood, the dog was always there. Most of the time he didn’t even want anything. He just wanted to be with us. That’s who Charlie was. He was a fun dog, a barky dog, often an annoying dog, but he was a dog who loved his family more than anything. That was evident in his last weeks. He was clearly in a ton of pain. He needed help to go up and down stairs, getting up on the bed or the couch. He was limping heavily. But he fought through all of that pain to be near us and play with us. Dogs really are capable of another level of love and affection. He fought through so much just to show us how much he loved us. About a year ago I was taking Charlie to our veterinarian for a routine appointment. When we pulled in, I saw a family parked near the hospital’s side door, carrying what looked to be their very sick dog into the building. When we entered the lobby, a candle was lit that told everyone there that somebody was saying goodbye to their pet that day. I instantly knew it was them and my heart sank. I looked at Charlie and realized that we would have to do that someday. It suddenly hit me how hard that would be. I never imagined that just months later I would be parked by that same side door, waiting to take Charlie in for that same reason. My wife Jonna and the kids had said goodbye to Charlie at home and I took him in myself. The staff at the hospital was so kind and comforting. They walked me through how the procedure would go and explained that Charlie would feel no pain during it. There are moments in your life that are seared in your memory forever. I will always remember Charlie laying in my lap as all of his pain went away. I will remember how it felt like the pain left his body and instantly went into mine. It was emotionally and physically painful. My body hurt. I’ve never felt anything like that. And I’ll remember little things – like Tom Cochrane’s “Life Is A Highway” playing on the animal hospital radio. I remember thinking in that moment – “Really? Life is a Highway? As I’m holding this dog?” It even made me laugh through the tears for a moment. But I will say that I’ve never listened more closely to song lyrics before in my life: Life’s like a road that you travel on When there’s one day here, and the next day gone Sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand Sometimes you turn your back to the wind There’s a world outside every darkened door Where blues won’t haunt you anymore Charlie loved life. He loved looking out the window and barking at everything he saw. He wanted to be outside. He got loose a few times and chased after cars and people in the neighborhood, tail always wagging. He just wanted to say hello. He was built for the highway and wanted to meet as many people and have as many experiences as possible. His time here was short … but it was special. Even though he was only with us for three and a half years, I wouldn’t trade him for any other dog. He was simply the best one. The last month of Charlie’s life was difficult for us. Thankfully we were surrounded by great family members and friends who were so encouraging. I work with so many great people who shared their own stories with me about their pets. It was so incredibly helpful to know we weren’t alone in our grief. I’m so thankful for those conversations. To all of you who reached out or spent that time sharing with me, I want you to know how helpful those conversations were. And I have to thank the staff at Central Bark in Grayslake, also. Charlie was a weekly visitor at the daycare there and we would board him when we had to travel out of town. The staff was so caring and careful with him in his last weeks. He loved being there and playing with his friends. They could have turned him away over that last month because he had obviously slowed down. Instead, they took extra care with him and gave him a final visit or two with his friends. There are good people there who truly care about the animals coming in and out of the building.
Charlie with a daycare friend
Finally, one of the questions I have been getting the most from people since we lost our dog – “Will you get another one?” I’ll be honest, a big part of me wonders if I ever want to go through something that painful again, having to say goodbye to another animal we are attached to. Comedian George Carlin famously said about dogs, “It’s going to end badly. You’re purchasing a small tragedy.” Do we really want to go through this kind of pain …. again? But then I think about why we felt so much pain in those final weeks and months, and continue to feel that pain now. It’s because of all of the incredible joy and love the dog brought to our family. It’s a joy I never could have imagined an animal would bring before we brought him home. I spent many years wondering how we could possibly manage our lives with something as time consuming as a dog. Now I can’t imagine spending the rest of our lives without one. We are so blessed for the time we had with our Char Char. We’ll never forget you buddy.

This Snoopy plush at CVS is the hottest gift of the holiday season

Every few holiday seasons, something goes viral and becomes the hottest gift. One year it was Tickle Me Elmo. The Beanie Babies were huge for a few years. Go way back and you’ll find the Cabbage Patch Doll craze. This year has another unlikely hot gift. A Snoopy plush in a puffer jacket that sells for $15 at CVS.

What’s the big deal?

Snoopy has seen a resurgence as of late, especially on TikTok. There are multiple accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers who share clips of the famous Peanuts dog. And really, how can you not love Snoopy? He was the best when I was a kid, and apparently that has transferred to the next generation. When fans found the plush dog at CVS they started posting about it and it took off from there. Everyone wants to get their hands on one of these. Mashable has a pretty good rundown of people trying to land the Snoopy plush. He comes with a puffer jacket and a winter hat. Some people are trying to resell these on eBay and other platforms. Not sure how much people are willing to pay for one, or if it’s more about the thrill of trying to track one down the old fashion way – in a store! Here are a few tweets of people who have been lucky enough to find one.   It appears Snoopy is back and I am all for it. Good luck getting your hands on one of these! Top Thrill 2: Cedar Point unveils re-imagined Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster

The rumors, the anticipation, the speculation – it’s all over. Cedar Point has officially unveiled their plans for a re-imagined version of the Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster.

The Original TTD

If you’re not familiar with the original ride, it opened back in 2003. Built by Intamin, the ride featured a hydraulic launch system that fired coaster trains from 0-120mph in about four seconds. Riders would then travel 420 feet into the air over a giant top hat, before spiraling 420 feet straight down back to Earth. If you got really lucky, the ride wouldn’t quite make it over the top, and you’d experience a rollback. That happened to me twice back in 2017. Take a look at the video.
Top Thrill Dragster was an incredible ride that was unfortunately difficult to maintain with its complex launch system. In 2021, a woman was severely injured when a metal bracket broke off the ride and struck her while she was waiting in line. The coaster has been closed since that incident with an uncertain future. Earlier this year, Cedar Point officially announced that the ride would be returning in a different form, and now we know what that will be.

Introducing Top Thrill 2

Yes, they’re calling it Top Thrill 2. The park is building a second 420 foot spike of track that will connect to the original ride. The new version of the coaster will be built by Vekoma and will launch riders forward at 74mph, then backwards up the new spike at 101mph, before finally hitting the forward launch again at 120mph and sending riders up over the original top hat. Here’s the official announcement video and some off-ride animation from the park.
A few questions still remain. What happens if the ride doesn’t make it over the top on the 120mph launch? Will you do the entire sequence again? In that situation, will three total launches turn into six total launches? That could be the ultimate rollback! Something else that’s been bugging me – Cedar Point was teasing the announcement with the hashtag #CP24PHP. It’s still not clear what the PHP stands for. I reached out for clarification and was told “It’s related to the ride but not likely to surface until later after the ride debuts.” It sounds like we will have time to keep speculating about something else! Top Thrill 2 is scheduled to open in 2024. What do you think about the changes? Personally, I like that the ride will be longer and I look forward to hanging in the air up that new 420 foot spike. I’ll miss the extreme force of that 0-120mph launch but I think a longer ride with multiple launches will be just as cool. I can’t wait to hop on board, hopefully it’s ready by opening day next season! More trending news here.

Watch the Super Mario Bros. plumbing company commercial

The Super Bowl was packed full of advertisements for all of the new movies coming to theaters, but it’s a commercial for a plumbing company that is trending online this morning. The Super Mario Bros. might be the world’s most famous plumbers. Now they have their own commercial for the Super Mario Bros. plumbing company. Illumination dropped this video last night, promoting the new Super Mario Bros. movie. It features Mario and Luigi selling their services in a cheesy local plumbing company commercial. The end of the ad features a phone number that works. When you call it, Luigi suggests that you text the number with your request instead. When you text them, it leads to a contact page where you can sign up for more texts and updates from the team. They even built a website for the company.  Here’s the Super Mario Bros. plumbing company commercial…
