Watch Patrick Kane singing karaoke at an Elmhurst bar

He told us it was coming.

Patrick Kane promised we’d be seeing more of him around town at the Chicago Blackhawks rally. Keeping up with tradition, he took the Stanley Cup to a recent Jimmy Buffet concert. After the show, Kane was spotted at Riley’s Gathering Place in Elmhurst and performed his own version of Tom Petty’s “Free Falling.”

CREED trailer offers first look at the new Rocky spinoff

I thought ROCKY BALBOA was a great way to finish off the Rocky series. We’ll see if this spinoff can capture that same magic.

CREED features Michael B. Jordan playing Apollo Creed’s son, and yes, Sylvester Stallone is back as Rocky to help him out in the ring. The first CREED trailer hits all of the notes a Rocky fan is hoping for, and the movie is directed by FRUITVALE STATION director Ryan Coogler, which makes me even more optimistic.

Here’s the trailer…

Spotted At The Store: Sprinkled Donut Cap’n Crunch

0

I love breakfast cereal. Been hooked on the stuff since I was a kid. I love walking down the aisle and seeing how these companies do their best to jump out form one another with crazy new creations.

For example, first there was Cap’n Crunch, then Cap’n Crunch with Crunchberries, then ALL Crunchberries, now…

Sprinkled Donut Cap’n Crunch. Is this a revolution in breakfast cereal technology or a sign of the apocalypse? I didn’t have the guts to find out.

What’s your favorite new cereal?

Summer In The City: Watch this amazing Chicago drone video

0

I’ve lived in the Chicago area my entire life. We tend to complain about a lot of things around here. It’s way too cold before it’s way too hot. Or in this summer’s case, it’s just not hot enough. Traffic stinks. It costs too much to park. Politics. Budget deficits.

That’s why I’m always happy when videos like this one come along. The team at Soaring Badger Productions put together some incredible drone footage of the city. It’s a great reminder of just how beautiful Chicago is. I love this town, imperfections and all.

Super Mario Bros. 3 blanket is SIX YEARS in the making

0

It took him 800 hours. Over SIX YEARS. But his masterpiece is now complete.

Computer programmer Kjetil Nordin of Denmark put his crochet skills to great use, creating this amazing blanket based on the map of Super Mario Bros. 3. Check out more of the photos….

SUPER MARIO BROTHERS BLANKET 2

Nordin tells NRK that he is looking for a way to display the blanket without ruining it. I’d wear it as a cape and take it everywhere I go.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra performs Chelsea Dagger to honor Blackhawks

Love for the Chicago Blackhawks could be found all over the city last week.

Even at the symphony.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra performed a surprise rendition of The Fratellis “Chelsea Dagger” – the Hawks’ goal song. From their YouTube description

From one championship team to another: Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra capped off a day of celebration by saluting the Stanley Cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks with a surprise reprise of the anthem “Chelsea Dagger.”

Watch a fan struggle with a poncho at a baseball game

Do ponchos come with instruction manuals? Maybe they should.

Have to say I’ve had moments like this. Just not on national TV. As Deadspin put it – poor poncho man.

Blackhawks fan’s reaction to Stanley Cup win goes viral, help us find him!

0

UPDATE: We found him!

It was just another morning after your home team wins the Stanley Cup.

I’m LIVE in River North on WGN Morning News. It’s 4:15 a.m. The bars are closed. The Cup is nowhere to be found. The streets are empty.

Except for one person.

That short interview turned out to be the most-shared exchange of my career. Within a few hours, it had been retweeted hundreds, eventually thousands of times. On Facebook it was even bigger. I was getting messages from people all over the country who had seen the clip pop up on their favorite websites – Deadspin, Bleacher ReportUproxx and more.

There was a bigger picture here, too. The growth of hockey’s African-American audience has been a much discussed topic as of late, especially here in Chicago. Awful Announcing posted our video and summed it all up nicely….

“There are black hockey fans (and players) out there, but the overriding perception is still of hockey as a very white sport, and past U.S. audience demographics seem to somewhat support that. However, that seems to be changing for both players and fans, and Chicago seems to be at the centre of that change; Shannon Ryan of The Chicago Tribune wrote an excellent piece last week citing numbers that suggest hockey’s black audience is growing dramatically, and its black audience in Chicago in particular is on the rise. You wouldn’t expect to see that issue addressed in a post-Stanley Cup man-on-the-street interview, but here we are. Ain’t that something indeed.”

The video had people talking and sharing everywhere. Later that night, it was featured on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

My WGN Morning News #Blackhawks fan interview was on Jimmy Kimmel Live & The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night. Anybody know this guy? Would love to catch up with him!Check out the clips…

Unfortunately, this gentleman dropped the mic and walked away pretty quickly. We weren’t able to get his name. We want to track him down – know him? I would love to put together a follow up for WGN Morning News and see what all of this attention has been like.
