Cobra’s Curse family spin roller coaster coming to Busch Gardens Tampa in 2016

0

2016 is going to be a busy year for amusement attractions in central Florida.

Universal Studios is launching a new King Kong attraction. SeaWorld will open Orlando’s tallest and fastest hyper-coaster. And now, Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay has unveiled plans for something that looks pretty unique – a family-spin coaster.

They’re calling it Cobra’s Curse. Mack Rides designed the new coaster, which takes riders up a vertical “elevator lift” before they head down a 70-foot first drop. You’ll hit speeds of just over 40mph with 2,100 feet of track. They say the ride will be at least 3.5 minutes long. But the most unique aspect has to be the train. As you head along the track, the cars will spin tilt-a-whirl style.

To keep things even more family-friendly, the coaster will have a height requirement of just 42-inches. I love giant coasters as much as the next person, but I also have two young kids at home. It’s great to see parks investing in unique attractions for kids that are too big for baby rides but not quite ready for the big coasters.

Shark-themed roller coaster “Mako” coming to SeaWorld in 2016

0

You can’t go wrong with a B&M hyper coaster. They’re smooth, quick and usually pack some good air time.

This week, SeaWorld unveiled plans to build Florida’s first hyper, the shark-themed “Mako.” It’ll be 200 feet tall, 4,760 feet long, and hit a top speed of 73 mph. Believe it or not, that’ll make “Mako” the tallest, fastest and longest thrill ride in central Florida. More from the Orlando Sentinel

“The addition, originally announced April 24, will be a good move for SeaWorld, which has suffered in its public perception in recent years, said Robert Niles, editor of Theme Park Insider website, which covers the industry.

“It’s about the safest possible bet that SeaWorld could make,” he said. “[Manufacturer] Bollinger & Mabillard coasters have wonderful reputations. They’re always a hit when they they’re installed someplace.”

There will be neither inverted twists nor legs dangling from the trains on Mako. Reining in the intensity level compared with new extreme coasters in parks elsewhere is a strategic move, Niles said.

“The baby-boom generation still remains strong in the travel marketplace, and their extreme-coaster riding days are long past,” Niles said.”

Watch the first Point Break remake trailer

If you watch the early WGN Morning News, you are probably aware that anchor Dan Ponce is obsessed with the movie “Point Break.” I’m a fan as well, but nowhere near his (somewhat unhealthy) level of fandom.

This morning brought us the first trailer to the “Point Break” remake. Yes, they are remaking “Point Break.”

“Point Break.”

No Keanu.

No Swayze.

I believe in not judging movies based on trailers. Even if I’m not reviewing movies as regularly as I used to, I’m still a film critic. But if you will just give me this one moment of weakness…..

This movie is going to suck.

Carry on. And here’s the trailer.

Watch John Oliver explain FIFA corruption

0

It’s been the big news across the world today. 14 people were indicted on corruption charges, including some high level FIFA officials who were accused of taking more than $150 million in bribes.

Why is this a big deal? FIFA is the organization that puts on the World Cup, one of the most watched and attended events on the planet.

Last year, John Oliver dedicated one of his segments to the organization, complaining about how this very thing is tarnishing the game he loves so much. It’s worth another watch, nearly one year later. Take a look…

I’m finally digging out after being buried in trailers.

The latest look at Star Wars: The Force Awakens is just…the best. It’s clear that J.J. Abrams and company get what makes this series special. Let’s hope the movie is just as great as this trailer…

Ant-Man promotion features ant-sized billboards

Talk about pandering to the little guy.

Marvel is promoting this summer’s ANT-MAN with a unique take on the movie billboard. These teeny ant-sized ads have been popping up in Australia. They even have their own LED lights for the overnight hours.

WATCH: Seabrook scores in 3 OT to lead Blackhawks over Predators in Game 4

There is nothing better than waking up at 1:45am to good news.

The Nashville Predators took the Chicago Blackhawks to THREE overtimes on Tuesday night. Game 4 of their NHL Playoff series didn’t start until 8:30 p.m. central – and it didn’t end until Brent Seabrook put a slapshot into the net in the 1 a.m. hour.

If you were sleeping like most of us AM Newsers, here is what you missed. Check out Seabrook’s game-winning in 3 OT!

The latest Terminator Genisys trailer has some major spoilers

So the new Terminator movie is going to take an interesting twist. How great would it be to sit in the theater, expecting yet another Terminator story that’s been told time and time again and BOOM. Wow, DIDN’T SEE THAT COMING! This is actually interesting!

That experience will no longer happen for me because I watched the second trailer for Terminator Genisys. For that reason, part of me doesn’t even want to post this trailer. Why should I subject anybody else to this spoilage?

But you are a human being with choices to make. You can decide to watch it, although if you are a big Terminator person and can’t wait to see the movie, I would advise against it.

Just wait until the movie opens on July 1 and avoid anybody who has seen this trailer and any future TV spots…..

WARNING: SPOILERS IN THE TRAILER BELOW

SEE! I told you not to watch it!

Watch J.J. Watt’s ridiculous 61″ box jump

0

J.J. Watt can jump 61 inches into the air. I would jump over EVERYTHING if I had that kind of power. I wouldn’t walk around anything ever again.

But I’m not J.J. Watt…although I do yell like this after I finish an Italian Beef sandwich.

Let’s go to the video!
