Jim Carrey spoofs Matthew McConaughey’s Lincoln ads on SNL

JIM CARREY LINCOLN ADS

We got to see a few things on this week’s “Saturday Night Live.” One was a whole bunch of people doing a terrible impression of some of Jim Carrey’s famous characters.

And then there was this.

Carrey took on Matthew McConaughey’s out-there Lincoln commercials with a series of spoofs, each one more bizarre than the last. It was Carrey at his best, nailing McConaughey’s drawl while making a complete mockery of these really strange, if somewhat mesmerizing commercials.

Joe Maddon opts out of Rays deal, will he manage the Cubs?

0

Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon has opted out of his deal, a move that caught management off guard….

Rays president of baseball operations Matt Silverman said he was “surprised” and “disappointed” that Maddon chose to leave, and that he was “very comfortable” what what he called “very generous” offers. Silverman said he was confident the money component was not the reason Maddon left.

So, as a baseball fan, you look to see who has an immediate opening for a manager. Just one team – the Minnesota Twins. Would Maddon opt out to head there? Seems unlikely.

What’s next? Former Rays General Manager Andrew Friedman got paid $35 million to ditch Tampa and head to Los Angeles, so it would only make sense if Maddon followed him out to the west coast. But then there are reports saying the Dodgers are sticking with Don Mattingly as their manager….

Dodgers’ president of baseball operations said just one week ago that Mattingly will “definitely” be the Dodgers’ manager for a fifth season in 2015, and any decision otherwise would necessitate some serious back-tracking.

“We’re very aligned on a lot of things philosophically and have thoroughly enjoyed those conversations,” Friedman said of preliminary talks with Mattingly. “We’re going to get together next week and I’ll look forward to building that relationship.”

Where else could Maddon be headed?

Chicago? The Cubs? Could it be? Theo has made it pretty clear he wants to see big improvement in 2015. Hiring a guy like Maddon would be a big step to getting there. That’s not taking away from Rick Renteria, who had some success as Cubs manager this season. But thinking about the kinds of things Maddon was able to do with young players in Tampa, and if the Cubs were to add some big name arms in the off season, it could make for an exciting summer on the North Side. We’ll see how this plays out. Here are more of the reports, speculation, and my personal favorite, UNCONFIRMED RUMORS floating around right now!

– The New York Post says the Cubs and Mets are frontrunners to land Maddon.

– The Chicago Tribune’s Paul Sullivan thinks the Cubs make the perfect fit for Maddon.

DACHSUNDS CREEK

It’s a story about life, love and growing up. And sticking your nose in your own…….

YouTuber Mike Immerman took the time to create a 3-minute trailer for “Dachshund’s Creek” – “Dawson’s Creek” with wiener dogs in the role of your favorite 90s crushes.

I wish there was more I could say about this, but I think the video speaks, or woofs, for itself!

Sorry. Video below. (h/t Time)

Watch Air New Zealand’s epic Hobbit-inspired safety video

HOBBIT VIDEO

If you think about it, we’re all kind of like Hobbits when we fly. Stuffed into a tube, not a lot of space, never enough food.

Air New Zealand has created another way to get passengers not to ignore the pre-flight safety demonstration. They put together a “Hobbit”-inspired epic video – using Middle Earth and even Elijah Wood to get you to understand what it means when the seatbelt light is on.

The “Avengers: Age Of Ultron” trailer is (officially) here!

ULTRON

It leaked, it was pulled down, and now it’s out. I guess we all win – unless you work on “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Anyhow, the first trailer for the Avengers sequel – “Avengers: Age Of Ultron” – is here, and it’s pretty great. I wonder if a James Spader-voiced Ultron will do as much head-cocking as he does on “The Blacklist.”

Reaction: Bears lose to Dolphins, frustration grows in locker room

0

The Bears couldn’t lose ANOTHER game at home, right? I mean, they haven’t lost three straight games to start a season since 2004.

Whoops.

The Dolphins were in control for most of their 27-14 win at Soldier Field. Once again, the much-hyped Bears offense couldn’t get it together and the fans let the players hear it.

That didn’t go over well.

After the game, reporters waiting to get into the Bears locker room heard some commotion….

Meanwhile, both the Packers and the Lions won yesterday, putting the Bears even further back in the division race. With road games against the Patriots and the Packers coming up – are we looking at a 3-6 football team? Not good. Here’s more Bears reaction….

– Adam Hoge says it’s fair to start questioning Marc Trestman’s leadership skills.

– Brad Biggs on the Bears loss and Brandon Marshall calling it “unacceptable.”

– Steve Rosenbloom says the Bears would be the stars of Clown College.

Apple Event Recap: Apple Pay date, new iPads, iMacs revealed

0

Start saving this weekend, because you’ll be able to start spending your Apple money on Monday!

It was Apple Event 2.0 Day, 2014. The company held another live event, this one at its Cupertino headquarters, to unveil a few more products hitting stores this year and a launch date for one of their newest features – Apple Pay.

CEO Tim Cook announced that starting October 20th, iPhone users will be able to download iOS 8.1, an update that will allow iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users to use their new mobile payment system. Using an NFC chip inside the phone, you’ll be able to place your iPhone right onto a sensor at participating stores and confirm your payment with the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Apple has partnered with Visa, American Express and MasterCard to link users credit cards to the Apple Pay service.

In addition, Apple unveiled a new line of iPads. Here is a quick rundown…

iPad Air 2

IPAD AIR 2

It’s thinner (18% slimmer), lighter (15 ounces), has a better resolution (2048 x 1536 pixels), takes a better picture (8MP camera, 1.2MP front camera), has a fingerprint sensor (Touch ID) and comes in new colors (silver, gold, space gray). All of that will cost you $499 and up, depending on the memory size you choose.

iPad Mini 3

IPAD MINI 3

Not as big an overhaul as the Air, the new Mini features the Touch ID and an upgraded 5MP camera. It starts at $399.

iMac with Retina Display

APPLE IMAC

Here’s where things get kind of interesting. The new display on the desktop iMac looks like something special. They’re calling it a Retina 5K display with an impressive 5120 x 2880 pixel resolution. To put that into perspective, 1080i HDTV resolution is 1920 x 1080. The newer Ultra HD, 4K resolution is generally 3840 x 2160. That puts the 27-inch iMac display well ahead of all of them.

The new iMac will start at $2,499.99, but it makes you wonder. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a television set with that resolution at that price point?

No Apple TV Update? What Gives?!

APPLE TV

Speaking of television, for those of who hoping for an overhaul of the Apple TV streaming system, today wasn’t your day. With all of the talk about streaming services this week, you’d think it would have been the perfect time to announce an Apple TV upgrade – but no luck. Maybe they’re holding out for a bigger TV announcement, or maybe they’re just not focused on it right now. However, with more and more television viewers opting to cut the chord, it seems like Apple’s interest in the area would continue to grow.

More on the announcement from around the web…

– Mashable has “Everything You Need To Know About The iPad Event”

– The Verge offers the “8 Most Important Announcements From The Apple iPad Event”

– Techcrunch thinks Apple announced “Too Many iPads”

– Re/Code also wonders if the new iMac display foreshadows an Apple television set.

Watch ‘Star Wars’ fans recreate ‘The Empire Strikes Back’

It took 480 “Star Wars” fans sending in more than 1,500 submissions recreating different scenes from “The Empire Strikes Back.” Now they have all been assembled into one long version – the entire film recreated shot for shot. From the YouTube description…

The project launched in 2013, with fans claiming 15-second scenes to reimagine as they saw fit – resulting in sequences created with everything from action figures to cardboard props to stunning visual effects. Helmed by Casey Pugh, who oversaw 2010’s Emmy-winning Star Wars Uncut, the new film has a wonderful homemade charm, stands as an affectionate tribute to The Empire Strikes Back, and is a testament to the talent, imagination, and dedication of Star Wars fans.
