Batman The Ride 4D Roller Coaster Construction Tour at Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Take a look behind the scenes as work is underway on the Batman The Ride 4D roller coaster

It’s one of the most anticipated rides of 2015. The Batman The Ride 4D roller coaster will take riders over 1,000 feet of track at speeds up to 40 mph. Those aren’t HUGE numbers when it comes to roller coasters – it’s the track design that makes this one unique.

They’re calling this a “Free Spin” coaster. As riders navigate the winding track, they’ll flip head over feet multiple times. They’ll spin freely, but there will be magnetic kickers along the track. Here’s more from the LA Times…

After ascending a 120-foot-tall vertical lift, riders will undulate over two hills while flipping forward twice before diving over a beyond-vertical raven drop. Following a reverse flip, riders will spin backward while falling over another beyond-vertical raven drop before executing a final forward flip. The weak-stomached need not apply.

Aided by magnetic kickers along the track, the Batman trains will spin freely based on gravity and the weight distribution of the cars. Based on rider feedback, Fiesta Texas can increase or decrease the amount of spinning by adjusting the kickers.

Theme Park Review has posted a construction tour of the site – check out the video above. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but you get a sense of the footprint this thing will sit on. What do you think? Would you ride this thing?

Lions fans have their cheese grater hats on a week early

I snapped this photo downtown after the Lions beat the Bears. They’ll take on the Packers this Sunday with the NFC North title on the line. They won’t have their stompy center, though.

Report: Marc Trestman likely fired at season’s end

Dan Bernstein of 670 The Score says Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman is expected to be let go when the season is over

This week on “As The Bears Turn,” the drama continues – despite having two more years left on his contract, it appears Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman is on his way out. This tweet from 670 The Score’s Dan Bernstein reinforces what many Bears fans are expecting….

With the way this season has gone, you would expect to see big changes in the Bears coaching staff – but the bigger question remains with the GM situation. If you’re going to send Marc Trestman out the door after just two seasons, are you going to let the guy who hired him pick a new coach? Phil Emery was also the guy who signed Jay Cutler to a gigantic contract and made very supportive statements about the quarterback.

Sooo…if you show Emery out – what about Cutler? Assuming you can’t find a trade partner after his disastrous performances of late, do you cut him and eat the extra $15 million he would be owed for next season? It’s going to be a few months of big decisions at Halas Hall.

All of this just a few months after experts were making statements like this. Sigh.

Carmike Cinemas drops THE INTERVIEW after new threats

Sony Pictures tells theater owners they don’t have to show the Seth Rogen, James Franco comedy after new threats from hacker group

THE INTERVIEW PHOTO

Sony Pictures sent a message to its exhibitors – the studio said it would understand if they chose not to show their Christmas Day comedy THE INTERVIEW after the latest rounds of threats by a hacker group. More from the Hollywood Reporter

The latest anonymous email from the hackers, issued Tuesday, appeared to threaten violence against public screenings of the movie. Citing 9/11, the hackers issued a warning and said, “We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places The Interview be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to.” While the Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday that it has found no evidence of an active plot against movie theaters in the U.S., the threat has raised concerns among exhibitors and other studios.

Following up on that, Georgia-based theater chain Carmike Cinemas has said they will not be showing THE INTERVIEW. They operate 271 theaters in 41 states.

There has been a lot of reaction to this latest threat, particularly Carmike’s decision not to show the film. Here’s a roundup…

For now, Carmike is the only theater chain who has pledged not to show the film. We’ll keep you posted if that changes.

The first preview for Malick’s latest film hit the internet a few days ago. The KNIGHT OF CUPS trailer gives us our first look at Christian Bale as a Hollywood somebody who looks to be figuring out his place in the filthy world around him. It appears there will be partying, smashing of stuff and plenty of yelling.

KNIGHT OF CUPS also stars Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchett. It will premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in 2015.

Brookfield Zoo Holiday Magic 2014: Planning A Visit

We check out what Brookfield Zoo Holiday Magic 2014 has to offer – polar bears, a million Christmas lights and more

Holiday-Magic--604x233

We were seconds away from hitting the air when they opened the door. Hudson, a polar bear born in 2006, stumbled out into the habitat. I’m 33 years-old, I’ve been coming to the Brookfield Zoo as long as I can remember, and I still turn into a kid when I see an animal like that in person.

Every year, over a million lights are adorned all over the grounds for Brookfield Zoo Holiday Magic, their annual Christmas spectacular. We were there LIVE today on the 4-6am shows of the WGN Morning News.

As for things to see? First, we hit the West Mall of the Zoo – it’s been transformed into the Holiday Village. That’s where Santa has his headquarters. There is also a pretty neat light show set to music. Check out some video…

The trees are timed to a selection of holiday music playing in a constant loop. You can sit and watch it all, or just catch a bit of it each time you walk by. From there, we went to see Hudson the polar bear….

Brookfield’s Andre Copeland told us about how Polar Bears survive in the wild. At the zoo Hudson was dining on carrots and other vegetables. If you were to see polar bear like this in his native environment, he’d probably be hunting a seal. I suggested a live demonstration for our next visit. Not sure if that’s going to happen.

Next we went to check out the Holiday Light Show Spectacular. The entire thing is projected onto the front wall of The Swamp building on the south end of the zoo. Guests can email photographs of their family to [email protected] and they could become a part of the show. Other highlights include a 3D dancing Santa and other fun winter animations. And to cap things off, more animals…

While they aren’t quite creatures of the winter, we went inside to check out a few of the zoo’s ambassador animals. They included a Porcupine and a Serval. Both were a lot of fun to see up close – the Serval looks like a cross between a Cheetah and your typical house cat. The thing can run up to 45 mph and jump nine feet in the air. Check out our segment with them…

Brookfield Zoo Holiday Magic runs through the end of December. You can see it on Saturdays and Sundays from 4-9pm, and the entire week of December 26-31. It’s one of those events I enjoy covering every year – I feel like a learn something about wildlife every time I visit. Hopefully viewers do, too. Here’s more contact info in case you’d like to get in touch with Brookfield Zoo…

Funniest reactions to EATEN ALIVE Discovery Channel special

Like other death-defying TV stunts, the reaction to the EATEN ALIVE Discovery Channel special is better than the actual show

Eaten Alive Discovery Channel special features man volunteering to be eaten by giant anaconda snake

Naturalist Paul Rosolie captivated the nation, or at least a small portion of it, by volunteering to be eaten by a giant anaconda snake as part of the EATEN ALIVE Discovery Channel special. We’re talking a 250 pound, GIANT snake. Sounds great, right? Who wouldn’t want to see a grown man get devoured by a reptile? Here is the promo

But the show spent almost two hours getting to the big moment. Once Paul was all suited-up in his snake-proof attire, he encountered the great beast. It bit down on his arm, wrapped around his body, eventually moved its mouth to his head….and Paul tapped out.

Viewers felt ripped off. This man was still alive, sure, but he was in no way “eaten.” At least Geraldo actually made it INSIDE Al Capone’s vault.

Here are some of the funniest tweets posted during last night’s show….
