Brookfield Zoo Holiday Magic 2014: Planning A Visit

0

We check out what Brookfield Zoo Holiday Magic 2014 has to offer – polar bears, a million Christmas lights and more

Holiday-Magic--604x233

We were seconds away from hitting the air when they opened the door. Hudson, a polar bear born in 2006, stumbled out into the habitat. I’m 33 years-old, I’ve been coming to the Brookfield Zoo as long as I can remember, and I still turn into a kid when I see an animal like that in person.

Every year, over a million lights are adorned all over the grounds for Brookfield Zoo Holiday Magic, their annual Christmas spectacular. We were there LIVE today on the 4-6am shows of the WGN Morning News.

As for things to see? First, we hit the West Mall of the Zoo – it’s been transformed into the Holiday Village. That’s where Santa has his headquarters. There is also a pretty neat light show set to music. Check out some video…

The trees are timed to a selection of holiday music playing in a constant loop. You can sit and watch it all, or just catch a bit of it each time you walk by. From there, we went to see Hudson the polar bear….

Brookfield’s Andre Copeland told us about how Polar Bears survive in the wild. At the zoo Hudson was dining on carrots and other vegetables. If you were to see polar bear like this in his native environment, he’d probably be hunting a seal. I suggested a live demonstration for our next visit. Not sure if that’s going to happen.

Next we went to check out the Holiday Light Show Spectacular. The entire thing is projected onto the front wall of The Swamp building on the south end of the zoo. Guests can email photographs of their family to [email protected] and they could become a part of the show. Other highlights include a 3D dancing Santa and other fun winter animations. And to cap things off, more animals…

While they aren’t quite creatures of the winter, we went inside to check out a few of the zoo’s ambassador animals. They included a Porcupine and a Serval. Both were a lot of fun to see up close – the Serval looks like a cross between a Cheetah and your typical house cat. The thing can run up to 45 mph and jump nine feet in the air. Check out our segment with them…

Brookfield Zoo Holiday Magic runs through the end of December. You can see it on Saturdays and Sundays from 4-9pm, and the entire week of December 26-31. It’s one of those events I enjoy covering every year – I feel like a learn something about wildlife every time I visit. Hopefully viewers do, too. Here’s more contact info in case you’d like to get in touch with Brookfield Zoo…

Funniest reactions to EATEN ALIVE Discovery Channel special

Like other death-defying TV stunts, the reaction to the EATEN ALIVE Discovery Channel special is better than the actual show

Eaten Alive Discovery Channel special features man volunteering to be eaten by giant anaconda snake

Naturalist Paul Rosolie captivated the nation, or at least a small portion of it, by volunteering to be eaten by a giant anaconda snake as part of the EATEN ALIVE Discovery Channel special. We’re talking a 250 pound, GIANT snake. Sounds great, right? Who wouldn’t want to see a grown man get devoured by a reptile? Here is the promo

But the show spent almost two hours getting to the big moment. Once Paul was all suited-up in his snake-proof attire, he encountered the great beast. It bit down on his arm, wrapped around his body, eventually moved its mouth to his head….and Paul tapped out.

Viewers felt ripped off. This man was still alive, sure, but he was in no way “eaten.” At least Geraldo actually made it INSIDE Al Capone’s vault.

Here are some of the funniest tweets posted during last night’s show….

The Killers new Christmas song “Joel The Lump Of Coal” is here!

“Jimmy Kimmel Live” premieres The Killers new Christmas song with help of awesome Christmas sweaters, YOLO jokes

The Killers new Christmas song "Joel The Lump Of Coal" debuts on "Jimmy Kimmel Live"

The holiday just isn’t right without a video for The Killers new Christmas song. Every year the band puts together a song centered around the holiday for charity, and this year, they got some help from Jimmy Kimmel. More from Kimmel’s YouTube channel….

Every year since 2006, The Killers write and record a special Christmas song for a very good charity – the RED campaign. They usually collaborate on these. Some of the artists they’ve worked with include the band Dawes, Neil Tennant and Elton John. Needless to say, Jimmy was flattered that they asked him to be a part of it this year.

This year’s song is called “Joel The Lump Of Coal,” telling the story of a poor little piece of coal that’s trying to find his place in the Christmas season. Brandon Flowers and the rest of the band appeared in a bit on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to premiere the new song. It’s fun to see what these guys come up with every year.

Amazing WANDERERS short film imagines life beyond Earth

WANDERERS_ringshine_02

I’ve spent most of the month of November buried into a book about the creation of the solar system. I’ve also been searching Google for everything I can read about black holes, wormholes, anything space. It’s what an IMAX screening of INTERSTELLAR did to me. It jump started my fascination with the universe – how big it is, how small we are, and the amazing things we are capable of doing.

So here comes another film – but instead of three hours, it’s just over three minutes. It’s called WANDERERS, directed by Swedish digital artist and animator Erik Wernquist. The WANDERERS short film envisions mankind’s future expansion into the universe. From the website….

The title WANDERERS refer partly to the original meaning of the word “planet”. In ancient greek, the planets visible in the sky were collectively called “aster planetes” which means “wandering star”. It also refers to ourselves; for hundreds of thousands of years – the wanderers of the Earth. In time I hope we take that leap off the ground and permanently become wanderers of the sky. Wanderers among the wanderers.

The voice you hear in the short is astronomer and author Carl Sagan – an audio recording he made of his book “Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space.” Watch the video below! (h/t The Verge)

SNL Schoolhouse Rock parody spoofs Obama’s executive order

Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.03.06 AM

A funny SNL cold open?! I guess it depends on which side of the issue you’re on.

Last weekend’s Saturday Night Live opened with a spoof of Schoolhouse Rock, featuring Jay Pharoah’s President Obama taking a bill and chucking him down the Capitol Hill steps. He’s replaced by a cigarette-smoking Executive Order who tells us how government really works.

The reaction was pretty much what you’d expect. On the left, sites like Think Progress went through a point-by-point synopsis on how the segment was hilarious, but “totally wrong.” And on the other side, I would guess Rand Paul doesn’t post SNL sketches to his Facebook too often, so it appears he was a fan of the bit….

Watch the Jurassic World trailer premiere preview

Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 5.44.04 AM

We’ve moved well past simple movie trailers. Now we have trailers for trailers – it’s like the industry is just acknowledging that trailers are often much more entertaining than the films they are promoting.

Enter the Jurassic World trailer premiere preview. The first (well, technically second) look at the fourth Jurassic Park movie will premiere on Thursday, November 27th – but Universal has unveiled a short 20 second teaser to the trailer. It appears that Jurassic Park is back open for business as Jurassic World. I’m sure they had no problem finding somebody to insure the place because WHAT COULD GO WRONG?!

You can watch the teaser below. I’ll post the full trailer in a new post when it’s up on Thursday.

The world reacts to the insane Odell Beckham Jr catch

It was a rare moment where everybody on the internet seemed to agree. The Odell Beckham Jr catch. That’s all you need to say – it was THE catch of the 2014 NFL season. In contention for greatest catch of all time. In case you missed it…..GIF via Deadspin….

BECKHAM CATCH 1

Not only did the New York Giants wide receiver fight off defensive pass interference, but it appears Beckham caught that ball with three fingers, bending backwards and still getting that elbow down in bounds in the corner of the end zone.

The reaction was immediate. Fans took to Twitter with their thoughts on what they had just seen. Check out some of the best reaction below….
