Canada’s Wonderland unveils record breaking YUKON STRIKER dive coaster

The rumors are true.

Canada’s Wonderland has unveiled their new attraction for 2019. It’s a record breaking dive coaster from B&M they’re calling YUKON STRIKER.

If you are into tracking roller coaster rumors, you know this isn’t that big of a secret. But the big question was just how big would this dive coaster be? Now we have an answer.

Yukon Striker will feature a 245-foot first drop into an underground, underwater tunnel! You will hang for three seconds, staring down at that small hole in the water before plunging 90 degrees straight down!

The ride will hit a top speed of 80 miles per hour and travel a total of 3,625 feet. It’ll feature four inversions, including a first-of-its-kind 360 degree dive loop.

As for the records, it has a few. This will be the world’s fastest dive coaster, the world’s longest dive coaster, and the tallest dive coaster.

Enough talking! Let’s get to all of the video!

Here’s the YUKON STRIKER dive coaster POV and off-ride animation

Here are some renderings of what the ride will look like

Canada’s Wonderland is a Cedar Fair theme park located in Vaughan, Ontario near Toronto. Yukon Striker is scheduled to open for their 2019 season. Combine this with some of their other rides, including the gigacoaster Leviathan, and I may have to take my first trip to Canada in 2019! You can find more information about the park on their website here.

Watch some of Tom Skilling’s best moments on WGN television

It was August 13th, 1978. A meteorologist by the name of Tom Skilling was starting his first day at WGN Television. What followed was a 40 year career that made Skilling a household name.

If you live in or are from Chicago, I don’t need to tell you what has made Tom Skilling a household name. It isn’t just his accuracy with his weather forecasts. Tom is one of those lucky people who found his passion and was able to turn it into a career. It’s the passion and enthusiasm that Tom has for the weather that makes him special.

People ask me all the time – what is Tom Skilling like in person? He’s the same guy you see on TV! That’s what makes Tom, Tom. He’s REAL. This is not an act – Tom Skilling loves the weather. He loves science. He is genuinely excited and thrilled when he learns something new about the Earth and the way our climate works. And he loves to bring that knowledge to the airwaves and share it with his audience.

Today, Tom and WGN-TV celebrate an incredible partnership. Four decades of weather reports, weather special and all kinds of fun. Here are a few of Tom Skilling’s best moments on WGN.

“I’m Tom Freakin’ Skilling”

Pat Tomasulo’s bit about the Tribune Company going private brought us an all-time classic Skilling one-liner.

Here’s another Tomasulo gem that shows us Tom’s great comedic timing.

Tom Skilling gets emotional during the Total Eclipse

This is one of the many moments where Tom’s passion for our world was clearly on display. Tom was in downstate Illinois to see the total eclipse and couldn’t help getting a bit emotional.

Tom Skilling can’t find his weather clicker

Here’s another fun bit showing Tom’s sense of humor and the rest of the WGN Weather Team.

Tom Skilling being Chased by Tornados!

This was one of the notable specials featuring Skilling over the years. Here’s a clip of Tom being chased by a tornado.

Skilling sings Christmas Classics

Here is another one of the classic WGN Morning News bits. He sings some Christmas classics.

“It Sounded Like A Freight Train”

This was the early 1990s before the internet. Skilling’s work on tornado education was especially important.

“The Skilling Father” gives his blessing

Before our first ever WGN Morning News primetime special, Tom gives his blessing to the morning crew.

I’m sure there are so many more moments I’m missing. What’s your favorite Skilling moment? Feel free to leave them in the comments below!

The David Bote Grand Slam is even better with Titanic music

Unfortunately I wake up at 1:30am every morning. That means when Max Scherzer is mowing down the Cubs, you go to sleep thinking you’ll wake up to a loss.

Then you wake up and see the notification on your phone that says the Cubs beat the Nationals 4-3. You wonder how they were able to pull that off. You pull up the video.

My goodness.

Let’s talk about David Bote for a minute. A few weeks ago, the prospect nobody was talking about hit a ninth inning home run to tie the game agains the Diamondbacks. Then last night, he comes up with the bases loaded, down three runs and hits just the 29th ultimate Grand Slam in MLB history.

What a story.

If you missed the David Bote Grand Slam, here it is again in all of its glory.

And how could this moment be any better? If you add Titanic music to it, of course!

No matter what happens with the 2018 Chicago Cubs, this has to go down as one of the great regular season Cubs moments. What a night.

Columbia Fireflies host a DOGS EATING PEANUT BUTTER CONTEST

Minor League Baseball teams are all about wild promotions. You have to try and grab some attention with crazy food, stunts and giveaways. It’s one of the great things about the minor league. Oh, and did I mention we’re talking about a DOGS EATING PEANUT BUTTER CONTEST?!

This is all thanks to the Columbia Fireflies who held the contest to end all contests. Two dogs going head to head for our amusement.

Yes, two good boys named Charlie and Bentley staring at each other through a pane of glass covered in peanut butter. Whoever finishes first wins. I’m assuming that’s what the rules were. Does it really matter?

The Fireflies posted video of the contest on their Twitter and it ends before a winner is declared. But we’re all winners here, aren’t we? (h/t Deadspin)

Indianapolis Colts honor school shooting survivor Ella Whistler at training camp

“If we were all as tough as you, we’d probably win a bunch of Super Bowls.”

The Indianapolis Colts welcomed a special guest to their training camp this past Monday. 13 year-old Ella Whistler was shot seven times during the shooting at Noblesville West Middle School on May 25th. According to RTV6, Ella was “shot in the face, neck, hand, and upper chest area. She suffered collapsed lungs, a broken jaw, a broken clavicle, multiple broken neck vertebras, broken ribs, a severed vertebral vein, and significant nerve damage.”

Just a few months after the shooting and suffering all of those injuries, Ella and her family were able to visit Colts camp and even got a chance to go onto the field. Quarterback Andrew Luck invited her to help them finish practice. Ella counted to three and led the team in a loud “Ella Strong!”

The Colts posted the video on their Twitter account. You can see the video below.

UDI Dance group glows in the dark on America’s Got Talent

We had another episode of America’s Got Talent last night that brought all kinds of people onto the stage. Singers, gymnasts, acrobatic cats and plenty of dancing.

The UDI Dance group once again took the stage. The group out of Siberian is known for their glow-in-the-dark dance moves. I love this stuff – I spend much of the time trying to figure out just how they manage to do all of it.

Last night the performance started with one of the members jumping into a story featuring moving cars and Matrix-like slow motion. I wonder what a group like this could do with a big budget and a longer show.

They made the cut and will advance to the live shows. Check out the video below!

Nicole Kidman catches a GIANT SPIDER like it’s nbd

Nicole Kidman had a houseguest over the weekend that would cause many people to set their home ablaze and never look back.

I’m talking about a spider. But not a little spider you would see around these parts. I’m talking about a big spider. As the kids panic and yell at mom to get back, Kidman seems to get even closer to the creature. The video cuts and we see Kidman holding the spider in a jar.

How that actually happened is beyond me. She said the spider was released unharmed, which is nice.

Nicole Kidman, much braver than I would ever be in this situation. Here’s the video from her Instagram account

Dog takes GoPro and makes the best video ever

Thank you to Redditor carmenlighting and their dog Bonnie for making me smile this morning.

I first came across this video on Twitter. The dog has a GoPro in its mouth and runs all over the yard. Other dogs, and possibly some humans, are in hot pursuit.

That’s pretty much it. And it gave me a good laugh when I saw it today. Enjoy.

The only reason we have a GoPro… from r/Zoomies

A Twitter user took the video and added some Benny Hill music.

And here’s the video that has racked up 10 million views on Twitter!

John Crist shows us Every Parent At Disney and it’s unbelievably accurate

We made it to the happiest place on Earth. It’s 9am. I’ve gotta schedule every minute of our day until 9pm. Pay attention and stay close.

John Crist is one of my favorite comedians. His father is a pastor and he’s the third of eight homeschooled children. So much of his work pokes fun at the Christian community and subculture, but it’s all done in a positive way. He has more than 1 million people following him on Facebook alone. His videos regularly rack up millions of views.

Yesterday he posted his latest – Every Parent At Disney. If you’ve ever been to Disney World with your family, you will get a a lot of joy from this.

John is on a standup comedy tour across the country. He’s got a show coming up in Joliet on November 1st. In case you’re not familiar, here are some of John’s other classics. There are way too many to post them all:

James Corden goes skydiving with Tom Cruise on the Late Late Show

“If we die, I’m going to get NO press!”

“Mission Impossible: Fallout” comes out today. James Corden had Tom Cruise on “The Late Late Show” last night.

He could have had Tom do a nice interview in the cushy studio. Instead, the hopped into an airplane, and jumped out the back of it.

Check out the full segment below.
